Description: Learn the basics of cutting and piecing improvisationaly while stitching impov pods. Pods are leaves, are cups, are boats, are hills, are MORE. We are going to explore this simple improvisationaly cut and pieced curved shape from all angles. We will also talk about the fundamentals--including technical and design details--of curved improvisational pieced pods. It is great fun!

1003C – Experimental Freehand Embroidery

Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate

Description: Freehand embroidery, unlike counted threadwork, is stitched without any consideration of the fabric’s weave. The workshop will encompass the most often-used stitches including running, chain and chain variations, couching, buttonhole, back, satin, stem, darning, and straight. We will sample them in both traditional and experimental ways. I will bring samples to class to show how a single stitch can be used effectively in both simple and complex patterns. (I’m a graduate of London City & Guild Institute in Design and Embroidery, a 3 ½ intensive program).

In this workshop, students will concentrate on making one large wonky and curvy bodacious blossom!

Working with half-square triangles (HSTs) is a fundamental skill in quilting that can be used to create a wide variety of stunning quilt designs. We will present a step-by-step guide to help you make a beautiful quilt using HSTs.
